Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust
Does your child have a love of sailing? If so, they might love signing up for a holiday course, learning how to sail a dinghy on the Helford River. Courses are three days, either morning or afternoon, so you’d still have plenty of time for family fun. Children must be aged between a confident 8 years and 14 years old. No previous sailing experience is needed, sailors are grouped according to ability.
RYA instructors, safety boat crews and volunteers will ensure that the every session is carefully managed, educational and most importantly fun! Places are still available throughout August, so book now via the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust website.
Helford River Cruises
Hop aboard the Hannah Molly, a 19 foot, open-top, motor boat, and cruise your way along the tranquil waters of the Helford River. Start at the private foreshore of the Budock Vean Hotel and glide past Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, over to Helford Village and then meander up the river, and into Daphne Du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek before returning via Port Navas and the Duchy Oyster Farms.
You’re likely to see heron colonies on the shore of the creek, swans and other wildlife. The cruise lasts for around one and half hours and costs £20 per person. Pre-booking is essential.
Koru Kayaking
Two kayaking tours – one from Trevaunance Cove, at St Agnes on the north coast, and the other from the private beach at the Budock Vean hotel, on the Helford River. Both tours last around two hours and you’ll have the chance to swim from a secluded cove.
From St Agnes, you’ll head either east or west, depending on the weather conditions, and paddle along the dramatic coastline, looking out for dolphins, basking sharks or seals.
Alternatively, choose to paddle along the Helford River and into Daphne Du Maurier’s famous Frenchman’s Creek. Enjoy the scenery and watch out for herons and swans.
Blue Point Charter
Blue Point run private charters out of the Helford River, catering to your exact requirements; whether it’s ‘serious’ fishing you’re after or just a relaxed afternoon on the river with the children, these are the guys for you.
You’ll have the chance to fish for Haddock and Gunards in the open water, and Pollock or Cod in the waters nearer the wrecks. Skipper Dan will always advise on a likely catch, based on tide, weather and the crew’s interests and abilities.
All the safety gear, rods and tackle are included in the price, but you are welcome to take your own. And if fishing isn’t your thing, you can hire the boat for photography, snorkelling or wildlife watching.
